Press Freedom Day Celebrated on May 3rd

© AP ImagesThe yearly celebration of Press Freedom Day on May 3rd is an opportunity to pay tribute to journalists, to examine the challenges they face, and to assess the general state of the media across the world.

May 3rd is also an opportunity to highlight repressive and violent acts committed against members of the press.

The United States remains committed to supporting the freedom of the press, and reaffirms that, with this freedom, comes a great responsibility, and that the ultimate mission of the press is to inform the public and to hold governments accountable to their citizens.
