U.S. Embassy Celebrates Women’s History Month
March 27, 2009
Ambassador Michele J. Sison held a reception March 26 in honor of Women’s History Month. Since 1987, March has been identified by the U.S. Congress as the month to celebrate women’s contributions to society.
Over 100 women and men from throughout Lebanon joined the U.S. Embassy to celebrate women’s achievements in both the United States and Lebanon. The Lebanese who attended were lawyers, human rights activists, media specialists, educators, parliamentarians, and journalists.
In her remarks, the Ambassador talked about the women we know from history and emphasized the importance of women in our own lives. She noted that President Obama has appointed an Ambassador at Large for Women’s Global Affairs and has also formed a White House Council on Women and Girls. For the first time, an American president has established two positions specifically for women’s issues.
Ambassador Sison honored five Lebanese women who have contributed to Lebanon’s growth: Sylvana Lakkis for improving access for people with impairments to work and politics; Maya Mansour for advocating human rights and peace; Joumana Merhy for her work in human rights and educating people about women’s rights; Marie Ghantous for advancing human rights and liberties; and, Habbouba Aoun for her work on humanitarian relief, empowering women, children and youth, and in conflict resolution. The Ambassador and guests especially recognized May Chidiac for her contributions to Lebanon and her courage.
Sabrine Staples and Sean Thwaites, two American musical artists, performed a lovely selection of songs during the event.
