The U.S. Congress approved, on May 24, 2007, President Bush's request for $770 million in supplemental funding for Lebanon. This funding reflects a substantial increase in economic, humanitarian, and security assistance to Lebanon. This large increase in U.S. assistance for Lebanon reflects the unanimous support of the United States - its Administration and Congress - for the people of Lebanon.
This new funding will include $250 million in U.S. assistance for Lebanon to be directed to debt relief. $50 million will also be targeted to support programs that will strengthen legislative and judicial processes and municipal government operations, to support civil society participation and to improve primary and secondary schools.
The United States welcomed the opportunity to respond to the Government of Lebanon's request to expedite deliveries of planned U.S. military assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces. We are also working with international partners to provide additional assistance. President Bush has expressed its intent to program an additional $30.6 million for support to the Lebanese Armed Forces.
The United States believes that the Lebanese people deserve an independent and secure country in which the people are free to make decisions without fear of violence and intimidation. U.S. assistance to Lebanon aims to support the efforts of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Internal Security Forces to protect Lebanon's territory and people.
