U.S. Embassy Awards Scholarships to 140 Lebanese Public High School Students for English Language Study

March 25, 2007

U.S. Embassy Cultural Attaché Ryan Gliha honored 140 Lebanese public high school students who have been awarded U.S. Government-funded English Language ACCESS Scholarships, at the Hard Rock Café in Beirut on March 25, 2007.  Each student was awarded a certificate of acceptance into the ACCESS program, signed by U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Jeffrey Feltman.  These new ACCESS scholarship students come from schools all over Lebanon – Tripoli, Bint Jbeil, Zgharta, Jounieh, Bazourieh, Deir Keefa, and Saadnayel.  These students will join more than 400 other students currently studying English with the ACCESS Scholarship.  The two-year scholarships provide 400 hours of English language instruction and over 200 hours of  supplemental activities, including an introduction to community service, workshops on professional skills and career orientation, and cultural outings.

The U.S. Department of State English ACCESS Scholarship Program empowers 14 to 18 year-old students around the world to study English and participate in community awareness projects.  Participating students in Lebanon come from public secondary schools in the regions of North Lebanon, Beqaa, Mount Lebanon, Beirut and South Lebanon.  In total, the ACCESS program teaches English to 565 Lebanese youth, free of charge, at 29 locations throughout the country.  The program is administered in cooperation with the Lebanese Ministry of Education, which provides public school facilities for the academic year after-school classes.
