Trainers Receive Certificates for USAID Post-Harvest Food Handling Course

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef presented certificates to graduates of a teacher training course in post-harvest food handling techniques on Monday, August 13, 2007.
Loss of fresh fruits and vegetables after harvesting is estimated at 20 to 50 percent in developing countries, while is only 5 to 25 percent in developed countries. In Lebanon, improper food handling lowers the quality and quantity of what can be sold, making it harder for growers to compete in international markets and lowering their incomes.
The post-harvest handling courses are part of a two-year $8.3 million USAID program to reduce these losses, strengthen agriculture and bring more income to rural areas in Lebanon. It is carried out by CHF International. Sixty trainees from private companies, non-governmental organizations, universities and public institutions participated in the courses, which were held in June and August. The courses covered topics ranging from harvesting techniques and food safety to cooling systems and market preparation. The trainers are now qualified to train others in the techniques, spreading the know-how throughout the country.
Each course consisted of two sections. One section, conducted at the American University of Beirut, was theoretical and included lectures, demonstrations and exercises. The other section was practical, consisting of field trips to handling facilities as well as packing and storage houses. U.S.-trained Lebanese engineers delivered the course.
