USAID Funds Student Scholarships at the American Community School
August 17, 2007 United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef presented a check for $82,547 for scholarships to the American Community School in Beirut on August 17, 2007, bringing its total scholarship contribution to the school to $300,000 for the 2006-2007 academic year.
The scholarships enabled more than 100 Lebanese students from diverse regions of Lebanon to attend and benefit from an American-style education. In presenting the check for scholarships, Mr. Youssef noted that, “USAID will continue to support the American Community School in 2007-2008 since this donation from the American people reflects America’s commitment to Lebanon and the Lebanese people.”
The U.S. government’s support for the scholarships demonstrates the importance the United States accords education and its role in promoting a prosperous Lebanon. In keeping with these values, USAID also supports three other American-style educational institutions in Lebanon: American University of Beirut, Lebanese American University and the International College.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has worked in Lebanon since 1951, funding development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens. In Lebanon, USAID creates jobs, invests in youth and protects the environment. With funds from the American people, USAID provides $40 million in assistance a year, working in partnership with Lebanese and U.S. organizations.
