U.S. Ambassador Signs Letter of Agreement to Provide $60 million to the Lebanese Internal Security Forces

October 5, 2007)

ISF

Today, U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman signed a letter of agreement with General Ashraf Rifi of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces (ISF) for a $60 million U.S. bilateral assistance program with the Lebanese Government to enhance the capacity of the ISF.  Over the three year period of the grant, members of the ISF will be trained in specific investigation skills, learn new ways to maintain peace and security in Lebanon, and be provided with equipment.  This agreement is another sign of the United States’ commitment to Lebanon.

In his speech, Ambassador Feltman emphasized the United States’ support for the Government of Lebanon and its people.  He mentioned the $321 million dollars in grant assistance that the United States has given to the Lebanese Armed Forces in the last two years and said that the United States is committed to supporting and strengthening the institutions of the Lebanese state.

Ambassador Feltman then added that a strong army should be complimented by a well-trained and well-equipped police force, such as the ISF.  “The United States is dedicated to assisting the ISF in their development into a modern police force operating in a democratic society.”  With this support the ISF will be assisted in the challenges it faces.
