New Program Introduces Ten Lebanese Students to U.S. Academia and Culture
August 27, 2007
In an ongoing effort to bring the peoples of Lebanon and the United States closer, the U.S. Embassy in August sent a group of ten Lebanese undergraduate students to study at a variety of colleges and universities throughout the United States. This is the first year that the U.S. Department of State offered the “Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program.” The exchange participants hail from all parts of Lebanon, from Akkar to Saida and Beirut to Jibjannine, Bekaa. The students were chosen based on their superior academic performance, leadership abilities and adaptability.
During the academic year, the Lebanese student envoys will live on-campus with American peers and participate in extracurricular activities to develop a well-rounded understanding of American culture. Likewise, the students act as cultural ambassadors to their American host communities, teaching them about Lebanon. They will also have the opportunity to participate in community service activities. Five of this year’s students graduated from the Access Microscholarship Program, a Department of State initiative to teach English to teenagers in areas outside of Beirut. In September, more than 430 students throughout Lebanon are to complete the two-year language and cultural program.
