Statement by Assistant Secretary for Bureau of International Organizations Kristen Silverberg Following meeting with Prime Minister Siniora
June 5, 2007
I am pleased to have the opportunity to return to Beirut. Lebanon remains a high priority for President Bush and for the United States and so I am very grateful to Prime Minister Siniora for giving me his time today to discuss ways we can support Lebanon’s efforts to secure its sovereignty, independence and prosperity. I took the opportunity today to discuss with Prime Minister Siniora next steps in the international tribunal. In passing UNSCR 1757, the Security Council has followed the lead of the Lebanese people. The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was first requested by the Lebanese cabinet in December 2005, and then negotiated by the Government of Lebanon with the United Nations. Lebanon's National Dialogue unanimously backed the tribunal in March 2006, and the majority of the Lebanese parliament noted its support.
I also offered the Prime Minister the support of the United States in the ongoing battle of the Lebanese security forces against the al-Qaida-like extremists who have threatened the lives, the livelihood and security of not just the Palestinians but the Lebanese as well. Both our countries have experienced great loss of innocent lives at the hands of such terrorists. The Lebanese can be proud of the courage and determination with which the Lebanese Armed Forces are fighting to keep Lebanon secure.
