Under Secretary of State William Burns Visits Lebanon, Consults with Leaders

On February 16-17, 2010, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs William J. Burns visited Lebanon as part of a visit to several countries in the region. In Lebanon, Under Secretary Burns met with Lebanese government leaders, including President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister Saad Hariri. Under Secretary Burns conveyed the commitment of President Obama and Secretary Clinton to a sovereign and independent Lebanon, and expressed that the United States will continue to support efforts to strengthen Lebanese state institutions to build a unified, stable and prosperous Lebanon.
Under Secretary Burns also emphasized the United States’ commitment to reaching comprehensive peace in the Middle East. He reiterated that Lebanon would play a key role in the long-term effort to build lasting and comprehensive peace and stability in the Middle East region and that there would not be a lasting solution reached at Lebanon’s expense.
