U.S. Embassy Holds Voter Registration Drive
January 26, 2012
U.S. Ambassador Maura Connelly Registers to Vote
The U.S. Embassy in Beirut kicked off the 2012 election season with its inaugural Voter Registration Drive at the American Community School yesterday evening. U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly spoke to the attendees, reminding them that in a year of hotly contested presidential and congressional elections, it is more important than ever that American citizens exercise their right to vote.
Over 150 Americans gathered at this kick-off campaign to register to vote. Absentee voting rules have changed this year, and now, U.S. citizens voting overseas should register every year in order to receive absentee ballots to vote in elections. In order to ensure that ballots are counted, U.S. citizens are encouraged to register as early as possible!
The U.S. Embassy’s American Citizen Services section organizes voter registration drives bi-annually and this voter registration is the first in a series of voter registration events the U.S. Embassy plans to hold in 2012. U.S. citizens living in Lebanon who wish to register to vote can visit the American Citizens Services web-site (http://lebanon.usembassy.gov/information_for_travelers/voting-assistance.html), register in person at the Embassy, or at numerous future voter registration events. Many questions regarding absentee/overseas voting have been answered on our list of Frequently Asked Questions.
