Haret Sakhr: An Investment in Lebanon’s Public School System
February 29, 2012
U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the expansion of the Haret Sakhr School today. Funded by the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Lebanese Armed Forces, the $698,000 project began in June 2010 and provided construction of a new three-story building that includes a conference hall, library, computer lab, and multi-purpose room. Previously, the school had to restrict student enrollment for Haret Sakhr children due to lack of space. The community now has safe and adequate facilities to accommodate all its children that contribute to a conducive learning environment.
The Office of Defense Cooperation previously funded over $500,000 in public school construction and rehabilitation projects in Sin el-Fil and Al-Mat. This initiative demonstrates the U.S. Government’s overall commitment and support to Lebanon’s public school system that meets the needs of a new generation of Lebanese as they contribute to a pluralistic, prosperous, stable, and independent Lebanon.
It further complements the five-year, $75 million D-RASATI initiative, a joint project between the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) that targets Lebanon’s public schools to enhance student achievement through school rehabilitation, provision of equipment, teacher and leadership training, extracurricular activities, community engagement in local public schools, and establishes a monitoring and evaluation system to ensure high-quality performance. Under the D-RASATI initiative and in cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces, the Office of Defense Cooperation is currently seeking funding to rehabilitate an addition seven public schools.
The D-RASATI program was formally unveiled in a ceremony hosted by the Office of the Prime Minister at the Grand Serail on February 27.
