MEPI-Funded Summer Institutes for High School and University Student Leaders
January 04, 2006The U.S. Embassy announces the launching of this year’s competition for the 2006 MEPI Summer Study of the United States Institutes for High School and University Student Leaders. The Student Leader program offers recent high school graduates and first or second year university students the opportunity to participate in a six-week intensive institute on American and leadership studies at one of the top U.S. universities during summer 2006. Applications are due by January 27, 2006.
The U.S. Government, through the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), hosts top students from all Middle East and North African countries at one of several specially-selected universities in the United States. Students participate in lectures, readings, discussions, leadership development training, and cultural visits throughout the summer. Topics of discussion include the history of U.S. society, current political, social and economic issues, concepts of individual and civic responsibility, volunteerism, the rule of law, individual rights, and freedom of expression, equality, diversity, and tolerance. In addition, participants also enjoy living in the U.S. and learning about its culture and people.
All applicants must have high proficiency in English and be committed to study at a university in Lebanon in the fall of 2006. In addition, applicants should be able to demonstrate their leadership potential and commitment to community service and extracurricular activities. Applicants for the High School Institute must be between 17 and 19 years of age and graduating in summer 2006. Applicants for the University Institute must be 22 years of age or younger and registered for their first or second year at university.
Applications must be received no later than Friday, January 27, 2006.
