U.S. Embassy Condemns Attack Against his Excellency Minister Elias Murr

The Embassy of the United States of America condemns in the strongest terms the attack against His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Elias Murr that took place this morning, July 12, 2005. The Embassy expresses its hopes for the quick and full recovery of the Deputy Prime Minister, with whom the Embassy has enjoyed long and constructive cooperation. We also wish for the speedy recovery of the others injured. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed.

The list of victims of political violence in Lebanon is already too long. We sincerely hope that the list ends with today's attack. In targeting prominent public figures, the attackers strive to undermine the faith of the Lebanese people in their governing institutions. The Embassy is confident that the Lebanese people will not be deterred by these crimes from the path of political, economic, and institutional transformation on which they have embarked.
