U.S. Embassy Announces Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Scholarship in the U.S.

September 28, 2005

The U.S. Embassy announces the launching of this year’s competition for the 2007 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program. The FLTA program offers young teachers and graduate students of English to spend a year at a U.S. college or university to study and to work as Arabic language assistance. Two Lebanese Ministry of Education teachers are currently in the U.S. at Florida State University and Amherst College on FLTA scholarships.

The U.S. Government, through its Fulbright Scholarship programs, funds a nine-month, non-degree program at a university in the United States. Recipients will teach Arabic and enroll in at least two U.S. studies or teaching methodology classes each semester. Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English and should possess a university degree at the beginning of August 2006. The Fulbright scholarships cover expenses incurred for travel to and from the U.S., tuition, and monthly stipend to cover expenses, health insurance, and room and board. All applicants must be between 21 and 29 years old at the time of the application. They should have an excellent academic record, fluency in English, outstanding character, and a desire to use skills gained in the U.S. to serve Lebanon upon completion of their studies in the U.S.

To apply for this program, interested applicants must complete an application, including the written essays. If candidates have taken the TOEFL or a similar English proficiency exam scores should be included. Short listed candidates will be required to take the TOEFL (low-income applicants may apply for fee waivers.) Applications must be submitted to the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Office by November 30, 2005. Applications and more information are available on line at http://lebanon.usembassy.gov/lebanon/Scholarships.html.

The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is the premier international educational program sponsored by the United States Government. Since its inception, 255,000 students and scholars — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — have been given the opportunity to study and teach in each other’s countries, exchange ideas, and develop joint solutions to address shared concerns.
