USAID Signs Agreements With Six Lebanese Organizations Totaling $166,000

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef signed grant agreements with six Lebanese non-governmental organizations totaling $166,000 at the U.S. Embassy on October 06, 2005.

The organizations work in the fields of special education, vocational training, basic education, care for the mentally and physically challenged, access to information technology, and medical services. The six projects will directly benefit over 2,900 individuals, including students with special needs, vocational trainees, elementary school students, mentally disabled individuals, rural residents and medical patients from throughout Lebanon.

USAID signed agreements with the following organizations:

1) $48,000 to the Educational Charitable Association in Tripoli to support the Mina Namozeijieh Elementary School for Boys and Girls. Established since 1946, the elementary school accommodates 230 students aged between 4 and 11 years old. USAID’s assistance will enable the school to purchase classroom furniture and other materials to upgrade the school’s educational and pedagogical services, for a more modern learning environment.

2) $15,000 to Saint Pierre College in Baskinta to support the school’s vocational training section in electronics. The school provides both academic education and vocational training to 430 students in all grades. USAID’s assistance will help Saint Pierre College furnish the technical section leading to a certification in electronics, directly contributing to the technical formation of 18 professional technicians per year.

3) $10,000 to Sagesse High School Mary Mother of Wisdom in Ain Saade to furnish the Special Education Program section with specialized educational materials. The school recently established the Special Education Program that accommodates 48 children with special needs. The program is pioneering in the area, and offers services to children with special needs who suffer from learning disabilities such as: Disgraphia, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Trisonia, Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD) and Slow Learning.

4) $28,500 to the Lebanese Sporting Club Association in Bint Jbeil to establish a center for computer, Internet access and language training. The center is part of the Professional Computer Association (PCA)’s nationwide network of PiPOPs – or PCA Internet Points of Presence. The Bint Jbeil center will provide computer access to 600 individuals per year in Bint Jbeil and the surrounding villages.

5) $19,600 to Message de Paix in Ajaltoun to improve the organization’s facilities and open a dormitory section that will accommodate 8 mentally disabled persons per year. As a humanitarian organization, Message de Paix offers daily training, income-generating activities and day-care programs to 40 mentally disabled individuals.

6) $45,000 to Ras El Metn Women Society in Baabda to procure a bone density scanner for the organization’s dispensary, benefiting over 2,000 rural women per year by providing them with low cost high quality medical services. The dispensary serves up to 10,000 patients per year, offering a range of medical services including general health, cardiology, ophthalmology, dentistry, dermatology, internal medicine and endoscopy.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has worked in Lebanon since 1951, funding development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens.
