Transcript: Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs C. David Welch

Press availability following visit to LBCI Journalist May Chidiac

October 12, 2005

Question: What is your impression after visiting with May Chidiac today?

Assistant Secretary Welch: I’m stunned by what a brave, courageous, strong woman May Chidiac is. She has a long and difficult recovery ahead of her, but I must say she has amazing spirit. I’m deeply moved by this visit, as you can tell. I take renewed courage that I must do the right thing to help her, and others like her, who have been victims of terrorism. This sort of thing should never have happened—and that it happened to a figure of such recognition here in Lebanon, and throughout the Arab world, is, to me, a startling indication that whoever did this has no limits, no humanity. Those who committed this crime must be found, tried and sent to account for it.

Question: Does the U.S. Government point an accusing finger at any side as suspects in the series of the blasts, with the last one the attack on May Chidiac?

Assistant Secretary Welch: We point a big accusing finger at the animals who did this. One day we’re going to know who they are and then I trust in the justice system here to bring them to justice. That should be done as quickly as possible. In the mean time, we should all take renewed courage from May’s spirit and strength, so that people, such as journalists like you, can do their job in freedom and security. That’s what you deserve and that’s what the people of Lebanon deserve.
