FBI Director Mueller Visits Beirut
December 8, 2005
The Director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Robert S. Mueller, III, visited Beirut today as part of his ongoing trip through the region. This is the first-ever visit of an FBI Director to Lebanon.
During his visit, Mr. Mueller met with the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Justice, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Commander of the Internal Security Force. The purpose of the visit was for Mr. Mueller to learn about Lebanese government efforts to improve their criminal investigation capabilities, with the goal of enhancing the security and safety of all Lebanese. During the past year, FBI investigators and members of the Lebanese security services investigating the terrorist assassinations of Samir Kasir and George Hawi, and the terrorist attempt on the life of May Chidiac have engaged in working-level technical cooperation.
The FBI is deeply impressed with the integrity and dedication of Lebanon’s security professionals. As a symbol of cooperation and investment in Lebanon’s future, the FBI is donating over one million U.S. dollars in equipment to the Lebanese government’s forensics labs, and will also provide technical training for criminal forensic investigations. This training and equipment will provide Government of Lebanon security services with the training and technology they need to investigate, prosecute, and deter criminal and terrorist acts. The United States applauds the Government of Lebanon’s efforts to ensure public safety and security, and looks forward to a continuing relationship based on the shared values of transparency and rule of law.
