USAID Gives $75,000 to Ras El Metn Women’s Society and the Beekeepers Cooperative of Higher Metn

January 19, 2006

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef visited the completed projects of Ras El Metn Women’s Society in the district of Baabda and the Beekeepers’ Cooperative of Higher Metn at Quornayel on January 19, 2006.

USAID/Lebanon provided Ras El Metn Women’s Society with $ 45,000 to procure an osteoporosis diagnostic machine to improve the humanitarian services provided by the Society dispensary benefiting more than 2000 women per year in Ras El Metn and 14 surrounding villages. USAID also provided $30,000 to the Beekeepers’ Cooperative of Higher Metn in Quornayel to develop honey extraction, packaging and wax processing facilities that improve the income of 83 beekeepers in 31 villages in the region.

This assistance falls under USAID’s Small Awards Program, which helps Lebanese organizations working in the field of humanitarian assistance, economic opportunities, and social welfare improve the lives of Lebanese citizens within their respective communities.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has worked in Lebanon since 1951, funding development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens. USAID’s program promotes economic opportunities, job creation, good governance and environmental policies and practices in rural Lebanon. USAID provides $35 million in assistance each year and works in partnership with U.S. and Lebanese organizations throughout the country. USAID strengthens the relationship between the people of Lebanon and the people of the United States, and promotes a shared vision of democracy and socio-economic development.
