February 7, 2006U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Jeffrey D. Feltman opened an American photography
exhibit, “The Landmarks of New York: An Illustrated Record of the City’s
Historic Buildings,” at La Crypte, beneath l’Eglise Saint Joseph des Peres
Jesuites in Monot, Beirut, February 07, 2006. The exhibit of 80 black and white
photographs celebrates the 40th anniversary of the passage of the New York City
Landmarks Law. The exhibit will be on display at La Crypte from February 8
through 19, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The photographs will also be exhibited at
Beit-al-Fann, in al-Mina, Tripoli, from February 23-27, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00
p.m.
In his remarks, Ambassador Feltman noted the importance of the New
York City Landmarks Law in helping preserve buildings, properties and objects
with a unique character or special historic or aesthetic value. Such buildings
are an important part of the development of the cultural fabric of the United
States. Their preservation safeguards America’s historic, aesthetic and cultural
heritage. Preservation also provides a positive economic impact, enhancing many
attractions that benefit business and industry.
“The Landmarks of New
York” exhibit is one of a series of programs sponsored by the U.S. Embassy to
promote Lebanese efforts to preserve its cultural heritage. The U.S. Government
has awarded Lebanon $96,000 from the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation
to protect and restore three archeological sites. Similarly, the U.S. Government
has helped promote Lebanon’s cultural and archeological treasures through the
USAID-funded “Discover Lebanon” project, in cooperation with the Ministries of
Tourism, Culture and Environment.
