USAID Mission Director Attends Graduation Ceremony at Father Afif Osseiran Foundation in Fanar

June 22, 2006

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef attended a graduation ceremony for students at the Father Afif Osseiran Foundation in Fanar on June 22, 2006. Mr. Youssef presented certificates to 30 students who had completed their vocational training in the fields of car mechanics, general mechanics, electronics and carpentry. The students, between the ages of 16 and 18 years, graduated with the government-recognized BP (Brevet Professionnel) and CAP (Certificat d’Aptitude Professionnelle) certifications.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) assisted the Foundation with $40,000 to develop the car mechanics training department and to purchase furniture for the dormitory section. The assistance helped the Foundation upgrade the services it offers to young boys who wish to pursue a vocational career.
The Foundation has the capacity to provide vocational training free of charge to 150 young boys in the fields of car mechanics, electricity and welding. About 30 young professionals graduate every year from the Foundation, with up-to-date skills that enable them to quickly find suitable jobs.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has worked in Lebanon since 1951, funding development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens. USAID’s program promotes economic opportunities, job creation, good governance and environmental policies and practices in rural Lebanon. USAID provides $40 million assistance a year and works in partnership with U.S. and Lebanese organizations throughout the country. USAID strengthens the relationship between the people of Lebanon and the people of the United States, and promotes a shared vision of democracy and socio-economic development.
