July 6, 2006United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef inaugurated two USAID-funded projects – a medical center and a consumer protection office – in Beirut on July 5, 2006. The Child and Mother Welfare Society received assistance from USAID for $50,000 to purchase medical equipment for its medical center in Aisha Bakkar in Beirut. Founded in 1944 as non-profit humanitarian organization, the Child and Mother Welfare Society aims to improve the livelihood of Lebanese families. The medical center includes a hospital and a dispensary whose mission is to provide high quality medical services at low cost, serving nine thousand patients per year, coming from all Lebanese regions. Consumers Lebanon received assistance from USAID for $25,000 to equip their first newly established consumer protection office in Hamra in Beirut. The office will serve as the headquarters for the organization’s management activities to address consumer protection issues more efficiently. The office will also serve as a one-stop shop for consumers to file complaints. The funding for these projects underscores the compassion of the American people, and their conviction that every person is unique and valuable. As President Bush said in his 2006 State of the Union address, “For people everywhere, the United States is a partner for a better life.” The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has worked in Lebanon since 1951, funding development projects to benefit Lebanese citizens. USAID’s program promotes economic opportunities, job creation, good governance and environmental policies and practices in rural Lebanon. USAID provides $40 million assistance a year and works in partnership with U.S. and Lebanese organizations throughout the country. USAID strengthens the relationship between the people of Lebanon and the people of the United States, and promotes a shared vision of democracy and socio-economic development.
