U.S. Embassy Announces Teaching Scholarship in the United States
November 6, 2006The U.S. Embassy announces the launching of this year’s competition for the 2007 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program. The FLTA program offers young teachers and graduate students of English the opportunity to spend one academic year at a U.S. college or university to study and to work as Arabic language instructors. Over the past two years, Lebanese FLTA winners have been placed at several prestigious American universities, including Tufts University, Florida State University, Bard College, and Amherst College.
The U.S. Government, through its Fulbright Scholarship programs, funds the FLTA's nine-month, non-degree program at a university in the United States. Recipients will teach Arabic and enroll in at least two U.S. studies or teaching methodology classes each semester. Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English and should possess a university degree by the beginning of August 2007. The FLTA scholarships cover all of the winner's expenses, including international travel, tuition, monthly stipend, health insurance, and accommodations.
Applicants must be between 21 and 29 years old at the time of the application. Candidates should have an excellent academic record, fluency in English, outstanding character, and a desire to use skills gained in the U.S. to serve Lebanon upon completion of their studies in the U.S.
Applications and all required materials must be submitted to the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Office by January 12, 2007. Links to the online application and more information are available at the Embassy website at http://lebanon.usembassy.gov/lebanon/Scholarships.html
