2006 PRESS RELEASES
Statement by U.S. Department of State Under Secretary for Management Henrietta Fore After Meeting Prime Minister Siniora
November 28, 2006
I am pleased to be in Beirut today, my second visit to Lebanon since my appointment as Under Secretary of Management in August 2005. My responsibilities include the people, resources, facilities, technology and security of the Department of State.
I began my meeting with the Prime Minister by offering condolences, on behalf of the American people and the U.S. Government, for the senseless murder of Minister of Industry Pierre Gemayel. I reaffirmed the strong support of the United States to work with the Government of Lebanon and the Lebanese people to realize their aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous, sovereign and secure country.
The purpose of my meeting today with Prime Minister Siniora was to thank the Government of Lebanon for its assistance this summer when the United States helped more than 15,000 Americans depart Lebanon safely. Without the cooperation and assistance of the Government of Lebanon, we simply could not have moved so many people, so quickly. I thanked the Prime Minister for the cooperation the United States received from a broad range of Lebanese government entities, including the Internal Security Forces.
I also re-assured the Prime Minister that the United States Embassy has absolutely no plans to close its doors in Lebanon, nor has it ordered any departure of American citizens. The United States relationship with Lebanon remains firm, enduring and non-negotiable. The U.S. Embassy plays an important role-and will continue to do so-supporting diverse programs that contribute to the dynamic relationship between our two countries.
The sheer number of Americans present in Lebanon this summer illustrates the long-standing ties of affection between our two peoples-American and Lebanese-that provides a strong foundation for our bilateral relationship. The commitment by President Bush of $230 million to assist Lebanon rebuild after this summer's hostilities is further proof of the firm and enduring commitment of the United States to Lebanon. This assistance has been complemented by support from the U.S. private sector, to include mthe dynamic Lebanese-American community. A White House business delegation, as one example, has established a U.S. - Lebanon Partnership Fund and is now advocating vigorously with American businesses to include Lebanon in their plans.
I am proud of what the United States is doing to help Lebanon. As two diverse, democratic countries, Lebanon and the United States share common values and aspirations. The strong partnership between our two governments and two peoples offers the promise of a better life and peaceful future for us all.
