U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation 2009 Competition
October 17, 2008
The U.S. Embassy in Beirut is now accepting project proposals for the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation 2009 competition. The application deadline is December 3, 2008.
Program Information
Through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), the U.S. Department of State helps countries around the globe preserve historic sites, manuscripts, museum collections, and traditional forms of expression such as music, dance, and language. The AFCP, established by the U.S. Congress in 2001 to assist countries in preserving their cultural heritage, is the only U.S. Government program providing direct small grant support to heritage preservation. The AFCP emphasizes the United States’ commitment to preserving the world’s cultural heritage and affirms that preservation is an integral component of U.S. foreign relations.
Selection
Awards are based on the importance of the site, object, or traditional form of expression, the urgency of the preservation need, and the impact of U.S. support for the project. The project is a partnership between the U.S. Government and Lebanon. The U.S. Department of State developed the program guidelines and criteria and oversees the selection process. The U.S. Embassy monitors the implementation of selected projects.
To date, AFCP has funded eight projects in Lebanon.
The AFCP supports preservation of:
(a) Cultural objects and collections of objects from a museum, site, archive, or similar institution;
(b) Cultural sites; and
(c) Forms of traditional cultural expression.
The AFCP does not fund efforts to preserve private property.
