2009 Student Leaders Institutes Program - January 21, 2009
The Embassy of the United States of America is pleased to accept applications for the 2009 Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Student Leaders Institutes Program. This summer program provides opportunities for young leaders (aged 19 – 23) from Middle Eastern and North African universities to participate in a five-week intensive leadership training program in the United States. Applications are due to the U.S. Embassy by January 21, 2009.
What is the MEPI Student Leaders Institutes Program?
• A five-week intensive leadership training program in the United States for undergraduate students aged 19-23, beginning June 29, 2009.
• An opportunity to develop participants’ leadership and collective problem-solving skills, and explore U.S. history and culture to expand their leadership skills and knowledge.
• A series of hands-on leadership training workshops, academic sessions, site visits, community service projects, opportunities for interaction with Americans peers, and other cultural activities. It includes a two-day orientation in Washington D.C., a four-week academic residency program at a U.S. university or college, and a one-week educational study tour to one or two regions of the United States.
• A fully funded scholarship, including international airfare, travel within the United States, accommodation, food, and program fees.
• A follow-up alumni conference held in the Middle East or North Africa in early 2010.
Who is eligible to apply?
Competition for the MEPI Student Leaders Institutes Program is merit-based and open to persons who meet the following eligibility requirements:
• Be a Lebanese citizen or a legal, long-term Palestinian resident in Lebanon
• Be currently enrolled and in good standing at a university in Lebanon
• Be 19 to 23 years old as of June 29, 2009
• Be proficient in English
• Be committed to return to his/her home university in fall 2008, following completion of the program
• Be mature, responsible, independent, open-minded, tolerant, thoughtful, and inquisitive
• Have a strong interest in learning about the United States
• Have a sustained high level of academic achievement
• Possess strong leadership potential, a commitment to community, and extracurricular activities
• Be willing and able to participate fully in an intensive academic, community service-oriented, and active travel program
• Be comfortable with campus life, shared living accommodations while traveling with a multinational group of participants from the Middle East/North Africa and the United States, and potential adjustments to cultural and social practices different from those in Lebanon
• Has had little or preferably no study or travel experience outside Lebanon; Nominees with travel to the U.S. after their twelfth birthday will not be accepted.
• U.S. citizens are NOT eligible to apply.
