FLTA logoFulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) in the United States - Deadline October 1, 2009

The U.S. Embassy invites teachers and graduate students of English to apply for the 2010 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program.

This fellowship offers teachers and graduate students, aged 21 to 29, an opportunity to study teaching methodology and to work as Arabic language assistants for an academic year at a U.S. college or university.

All applicants must be between 21 and 29 years old at the time of the application and should have an excellent academic record, fluency in English, outstanding character, and desire to use skills gained in the United States to serve Lebanon.  During the past five years, Lebanese fellows have been placed at several prestigious American institutions.  Five Lebanese teachers are currently in the United States.

The Fulbright FLTA Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, funds a nine-month, non-degree program of study.  Award recipients teach Arabic and enroll in at least two American studies or teaching methodology classes each semester.  Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English and should possess a university degree by June 1, 2009.  The fellowship covers roundtrip airfare, tuition, health insurance, room and board, and a monthly stipend to cover incidental expenses.

To apply for this program, interested candidates must complete an online application, which includes essays.  If applicants have taken the TOEFL or a similar English proficiency exam, scores should be included.  Finalists will be required to take the TOEFL (low-income applicants may apply for fee waivers).  Required application materials must be submitted to the U.S. Embassy (c/o Public Diplomacy) by October 1, 2009.
