International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Ph.D. Study - Deadline May 18, 2009

 

FulbrightYou are invited to apply for a grant to pursue Ph.D. studies in the fields of engineering, science or technology at a university in the United States. The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award, which covers a maximum of three years of study beginning in August 2010, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State through the Embassy of the United States of America in Lebanon. The program is funded by the U.S. Congress in the name of Senator J. William Fulbright and demonstrates the United States’ commitment to welcoming outstanding future researchers and leaders to purse serious scientific study at U.S. institutions.
 
The grant includes: one roundtrip ticket between Lebanon and the United States, tuition, room and board, health insurance, books and allowances for research and professional conferences. Funding is not available to meet the expenses of Fulbright students’ dependents (spouses, children, parents, etc.). After three years, the host U.S. university is expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of the Ph.D.  
  

A. Requirements

 

A competitive applicant will have an excellent academic record, strong English language skills, an outstanding character, and the commitment to return to Lebanon upon completion of the program. An applicant:  

  • Must be a Lebanese citizen or a legal, long-term Palestinian resident with a Lebanese travel document.
  • Cannot be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (green card holder).
  • Will have completed a bachelor’s degree by August 1, 2010.
  • Must not be currently studying in the United States.
  • Must demonstrate academic excellence within his/her field of specialization.
  • May apply for studies in: aeronautics and astronomics/aeronautical engineering, agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only in entomology, plant biology, plant pathology, soil science), astronomy/planetary sciences, biology, chemistry, computer science/engineering, energy, engineering (biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, ocean and petroleum), environmental science/engineering, geology/earth and atmospheric sciences, information sciences and systems (engineering focus only), materials science/engineering, mathematics, neuroscience/brain and cognitive sciences, oceanography, public health (theoretical research focus only) and physics.  
  • Must obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 92-93 (Internet-based).

 

B. Provisions

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have not studied in the United States previously.
  • Fulbright students must return to Lebanon for at least two years and will not be eligible for U.S. employment, immigration or residency visas for two years after ending the program.

 

C. Instructions for Application

  1. Curriculum vitae or résumé
  2. Three sealed letters of reference
  3. Official transcript (in English) from each post-secondary institution attended
  4. TOEFL (if available)
  5. GRE General Exam (if available) with a minimum quantitative score of 700
  6. GRE Subject Exam (if available) for biology; biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, chemistry; computer science; mathematics; and physics

 

Note: Candidates are not required to submit GRE General or Subject Exam results at the time of application. Scores may be submitted if available. Final selection of Fulbright grantees, however, will be contingent upon successful completion of the requisite exams.

 

Submission deadline for all application materials is Monday, May 18, 2009 (4:30 p.m.)

Applications must be completed online. Supporting documents must be received by the U.S. Embassy by the above date. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

 

Short-listed candidates will be invited for an in-person interview.
