2006 Speeches
Remarks at Independent Media Conference Gala Dinner
June 22, 2006
I very happy to welcome all of you this evening. What a wonderful celebration of Lebanon’s dynamic media community to have so many of you here with us tonight.
Tonight’s dinner, in conjunction with our conference in support of independent media, is intended as a firm expression of our U.S. commitment to the future of Lebanon. Our message to you with this gathering is simple:
An independent media is essential for a free, sovereign and independent Lebanon.
Today’s exchange among media professionals from the United States, Lebanon, Europe and the region, offered an opportunity to explore avenues for financially sound, independent media models. The discussions at the sessions I attended were rich in ideas and perspectives, and I hope that each one of you who participated benefited.
I’d like to thank the speakers who traveled to Lebanon for the conference. I’m sure those of you who traveled here recognize—as I do—the creativity, talent, energy and drive which characterize Lebanon’s media and business communities. Lebanon deserves its reputation as a model of free expression and dialogue. Thank you for assisting us in supporting and developing the rich potential that exists here.
Thanks also to our dinner sponsor this evening: ARAMEX
I’d also like to thank MTV for their sponsorship of our working lunch today.
This conference is meant to underscore the firm, enduring and non-negotiable commitment of the United States to Lebanon. The Lebanese media has played an important role in the historic events which have unfolded in Lebanon in the past two years. It is appropriate to remember those who courageously spoke out for Lebanon and whose lives were taken from them: Gibran Tueni and Samir Kassir. The determination with which May Chediac is battling her injuries should inspire us all and shame any one of us who flags in our efforts to secure Lebanon’s complete sovereignty and independence. We must all remain determined to see those responsible for attacks on these symbols of Lebanese free expression to be brought to justice.
I invite you now to enjoy your meal and before dessert is served and will introduce Riz Khan who will be our speaker tonight.
