Statement by Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman on the Lebanese Victory over Terrorists

September 4, 2007

I am meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Murr to offer the congratulations of the United States to Lebanon on the victory over terrorists at Nahr al-Barid.  The determination of the Government of Lebanon, in particular the Ministry of Defense and the Lebanese Armed Forces, led to this decisive victory over Fatah al-Islam.

At the same time, we extend our condolences to the family and friends of the 163 courageous soldiers from the Lebanese Armed Forces who gave their lives in honor and defense of their nation’s security.  We also express our regret at the loss of innocent civilians, victims of the terrorists’ assaults.  Our thoughts are also with the hundreds of LAF wounded in the months-long battle.

Throughout the military campaign, the heroic LAF repeatedly demonstrated their professionalism, bravery and skill.  This victory reaffirms the capability of the leadership and soldiers of Lebanese Armed Forces as the long term guarantor of the security of Lebanon and of the Lebanese people.

The United States, as one of Lebanon’s strategic international partners, is proud to have provided supplies and training to the LAF at the request of the democratically elected Government of Lebanon to aid in the fight against this terrorist threat.  With the battle over, the United States looks forward to joining the reconstruction effort to aid Lebanese citizens and Palestinian refugees displaced as a result of the terrorists’ violence.
